The Kneighborhood Annex

professional blog of a teacher, future administrato, writer, learner, motivator, inspirerororor

So I walked into my new school today with the utmost excitement.  New school.  Fresh faces. New material. Fresh start.  And then I walked into my new classroom.  NO WHITEBOARD. NO TELEVISION. NO PROJECTOR. EEEEEK!!!  I guess I’ve been spoiled for the past two years.  I’ve used whiteboards, televisions, and projectors. I’ve used technology!!!  Anytime I could get my hands on it, I’ve used technology.  I love using it and kids of any age embrace it.

I think I can live without a whiteboard.  I actually like the look of an antiqued chalkboard…I just wish I had better handwriting.  Hopefully, I won’t use the board much because I’ll be using an LCD projector that will find its way to my classroom.

My entire style of teaching has evolved in a way that can not be returned to its previous state.  (I sound like a drug addict jonesing for technology)

What should I do?  Should I beg my principal for some techie tools?  Should I buy my own goodies to use?  I’ve been trolling for projectors and Interwrite pads on ebay and craigslist, but it’s nothing I can afford right now.

I’m stuck in a pickle!!

  1. hey granito!!!! i could only imagine what great pain you are in without all the goods!!!! it’s hard to undue one’s way of life…
anyway, best of luck to you with this new endeavor! oh, does your school have a webpage???? hehehehahhehah

  2. Try asking for some equipment through Tell Ms. Wilks Hi; I used to be the Media Specialist there. You’re right–there’s not an overabundance of equipment.

  3. So you say you are bringing in a projector? Where is it coming from?? YEAHHH!!! You will do fine Granito–just fine. We have EVERY BIT of confidence that you will get through this. As I hear about grants, I will continue to send them to you as well–with blessings I might add. I did tell TPTB that I would be sharing them. I’m excited to know you are not abandoning the blog, and hope to read all about your successes. Advice? Share ALL your students successes b/c of the technology with your administration. USE your technology to engage students, increase excitement in coming to your class, and do what ever you can to make your students, your administration, and your school LOOK GOOD! You will be floored at what these simple things will gain you. The rewards might even be more technology. Offer to lead other teachers (technophobes, veterans, AND newbies) into authentically using technology with their students. Do show and tells and help those who need it. Empower other teachers with your skills. OFFER to create web presence for your school if they do not have a one. There is MUCH to gain from doing these things, and WHO KNOWS where this will lead? You have much to gain form the skills you have. I am so proud to have been a small part in igniting your interest, though I realize a BIG PART of it was HCS and their laptop initiative. You are poised for greatness. Take advantage of that.

One last thing. Remember as a new person on your staff, you are on a new honeymoon. As a honeymooner, ask for EVERYTHING. Nothing is too grand. You may be pleasantly surprised at what is given, all b/c you asked. Teachers who have been there even a year do not have the freedom or comfort to ask. You are not supposed to know what not to ask for–so ask for it all.

Please keep usinformed okay? PS–should I sponsor the Stock Market Club? Im thinking about it…..
